The PTE Academic is divided into three core sections. The tasks are integrated—meaning some questions may assess more than one skill (e.g., listening and writing).
Duration: 77–93 minutes
This combined section evaluates both your verbal fluency and written expression. It includes the following tasks:
Personal Introduction (optional & unscored): A chance to introduce yourself to the institution.
Read Aloud: Read a short text aloud clearly into the microphone.
Repeat Sentence: Listen to a sentence and repeat it exactly as you heard.
Describe Image: Interpret and describe an image such as a chart, graph, or diagram.
Re-tell Lecture: Listen to a short lecture and summarize it in your own words.
Answer Short Question: Respond to factual questions with a word or phrase.
Summarize Written Text: Summarize a passage into a single sentence within 10 minutes.
Essay Writing: Write a 200–300 word argumentative essay on a given topic.

This section tests your ability to understand written English through various question formats:

Based on audio and video clips, this section tests your ability to understand spoken English.
Summarize Spoken Text: Listen to a lecture and summarize it in 50-70 words.
Multiple-choice, Single Answer: Choose the correct answer based on what you hear.
Multiple-choice, Multiple Answers: Choose all correct options.
Fill in the Blanks: Complete the transcript by typing in missing words.
Highlight Correct Summary: Pick the summary that best reflects the recording.
Select Missing Word: Choose the missing word in a sentence.
Highlight Incorrect Words: Identify mismatched words between the transcript and audio.
Write from Dictation: Type the sentence exactly as you hear it.
Score Range: Each skill is scored between 10 to 90.
Overall Score: Calculated from the average of the communicative skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing).
Reporting: Scores are presented in 1-point increments.
Result Validity: PTE scores are valid for two years from the test date.
